Tips for Improving the Sustainability of Your Research Lab
Equipment manufacturers offer simple ways to improve the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of existing research laboratories without rebuilding the entire lab.
System sustainability is classically defined as a way to meet the needs of current users without compromising the ability of future users to meet their own needs. This has been interpreted in research lab parlance as keeping operating costs as low as possible and minimizing the use of available resources, while also minimizing the release of waste products. Planning, designing and building a new lab that meets these sustainable requirements is the basic criteria lab managers now adhere to. Operating an existing lab that’s sustainable is more complex due to the installation of older, mostly unsustainable systems and the continuance of long-term—also mostly unsustainable—operations.
